Dorothy “Dot” Hartman Kancher passed away peacefully on December 28, 2018 at home, surrounded by her family. Dot was born in New Orleans. She moved to Los Angeles, as a teenager, with her family when her parents opened Rex Men’s Apparel in The Beverly Hills Hotel. After graduating from Los Angeles High School, Dot returned to New Orleans and married David Kancher, her husband of 52 years. She loved to volunteer, play mahjong, have dinner with her family, dance, and sing along with Frank Sinatra. Above all, she was passionately devoted to her family and would tell anyone in earshot of how proud she was of their personal and professional accomplishments.
Dot Kancher was preceded in death by her husband, David; her parents, Nat and Bertha Hartman; and her brother Gilbert Hartman. She is survived by her children, Shelley Forman and Michael Kancher (Pam); her grandchildren, Dan Forman (Cat), Adam Kancher, and Spencer Kancher; and her three great-grandchildren, Jack Forman, Ben Forman, and Charlie Forman. The family extends their deepest appreciation to Nicole, Vanessa L., Darlene, Ethel, Vanessa R., and Vallerie for their wonderful care over the last 4 years.
Graveside services will be held on Sunday, December 30th at 10:00 a.m. at Gates of Prayer Cemetery, 1411 Joseph Street. Rabbi David Gerber will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Congregation Gates of Prayer or the charity of your choice.
