

Dorothy “Dottie” Bergeron Mendel, a resident of Covington, passed away peacefully at her granddaughter’s home in Mandeville, LA on Friday, September 15, 2023, at the age of 91. Dottie was married for 58 years to the late John J. Mendel, Jr. Dottie had a passion for traveling the world, especially camping, and made lifelong friends along the way. Some of her hobbies were crocheting, sewing, reading, and crossword puzzles. She was one of the best cooks and no one left her home hungry. She loved the Saints, even in the early years, and was also a Tulane and LSU fan. Dottie was a woman with grit and grace. Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, George A. and Laura B. Bergeron; sister, Joan Bergeron; brother, George A. Bergeron, Jr; and son, John J. Mendel, III (Sheila). She is survived by her sister, Joyce Brown (James); children, Deborah M. Becnel (George), David J. and Jeffrey A. Mendel (Darliss); grandchildren, Ambre Mendel Colletti, Jonathan Z. (Christina), Bradley M., Philip A., and Cynthia A. Mendel; and great-grandchildren, Jackson and Carson Colletti, Adriana, Teresa, Lulu, Henri and Jacob Mendel, Autumn and Avery Mooney, Leola, Elena, and Carlos Doubleday, III. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dottie was a parishioner of the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Covington, LA, and former parishioner of St. Rita Catholic Church in Harahan, LA. She was a graduate of Jefferson High School class of 1949. She and her late husband were lifetime members of the FCRV International Camping Club, formerly known as NCHA Camping Club, hosting Louisiana’s first Retiree Rally in Rayne, LA in 2002 where they reigned as King and Queen. The family is grateful to Egan Hospice for their compassion and care. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation and funeral mass on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70124. The visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 p.m. The interment will follow on the same grounds at All Saints Mausoleum.
