Dorothy Ciufi Moppert

Dorothy “Dottie” Ciufi Moppert died peacefully in her home in Marrero on August 26, 2026, at the age of 102. She was born on January 12, 1924, in New Orleans to Lulu and Joseph Ciufi. Her mother was Lebanese and her father was Italian. Many would say that this remarkable combination contributed to Dorothy becoming a woman who loved deeply, believed strongly in her God, and was never afraid to speak her thoughts or offer her opinion.

As a teenager, Dorothy experienced her first heartbreak when her brother, Alvin Cuifi, became a casualty of World War II.

A few years later she married Eugene “Gene” Meyers Moppert Jr. Together they built a family and shared a life filled with love, friendship, dancing and weekends spent with their many friends.

Dottie and Gene raised four children, Eugene Meyers Moppert III, Vicki Elizabeth Moppert, Jack Alvin Moppert and Christopher James Moppert.

She was a beloved grandmother to her grandchildren, Eugene “Geno” M. Moppert IV, Sean Moppert, and Melissa Moppert, as well as five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy’s life was marked by extraordinary love, tremendous faith, and profound loss. Perhaps the greatest heartbreak of her life came in 1968 when she lost her beloved oldest son, Eugene “Kippy” Moppert, in the Vietnam War. Kippy’s life and service were later honored by the Smithsonian Institution, where his letters and his American flag are preserved today.

Dorothy lost her husband, Gene, when he was only 55 years old. Their life together was a cherished part of her memories.

Several years later she developed one of the most special relationships of her life with Herb Berryman, who became her constant friend until his death. In 2021, she experienced yet another devastating loss when her youngest son, Christopher, passed away.

Through it all, Dorothy had a wonderful sense of humor and a love for the simple pleasures of life. Among her favorite things to do later in life was watching reruns of Downton Abbey and Young Sheldon.

Her faith in God carried her through the darkest chapters of her life. As she grew older, she became increasingly ready for the day when she could be reunited with her Savior, her beloved husband, and all the loved ones who had gone before her. Dorothy’s life was not always an easy one. It was a life filled with both unimaginable grief and immeasurable love.

She endured. She rebuilt. She remembered. She loved. And she never stopped believing. At 102 years old, Dorothy was finally ready to go home.

May she rest in peace, reunited with those she loved, and held forever in the arms of the God in whom she so strongly believed.
