

Douglas F. Block, a lifelong resident of New Orleans and River Ridge LA, departed this life on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2021. He was 94 years old. Douglas was a graduate of Jesuit High School and Loyola University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. He was employed by Chevron Oil Company for his entire working career which began as the Delta Gulf Coast division accounting and office manager where he was a member of the New Orleans Petroleum Accountants Society and after 38 years of service he retired in San Francisco, California.
Douglas was a founding member of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church Parish where he served on the Pastoral Council, Finance Council, and Capital Campaign General Chairman. He was president of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, a member of the Holy Name Society, the Seniors Ministry, a Lector, and Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist.
Douglas was a member of the Saint Matthew Development Advisory Board, the Stewardship Ministry, a recipient of the Saint Matthew Service Ministries Award, and the Order of St. Louis Medallion, an award of the Archdiocese of New Orleans to honor laity for outstanding contributions of time and talent to the church.
Douglas was Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Edward J. Stoulig, Sr. Council #3524, and a charter member of St. Matthew the Apostle Council #13425. He was a member of the William J. Guste, Jr. 4th Degree Assembly and the John Paul II, 4th Degree Assembly. He was President of the River Ridge Lions Club and Cabinet Secretary of Louisiana District 8-S Lions Clubs.
Douglas is preceded in death by his parents, Louis Adrian Block and Melanie Derenbecker Block, and his siblings; brothers Adrian, Louis, and Horace, and sisters Myrle and Elvira, as well as his brother John who died as an infant. He was the loving and devoted husband of the late Helen Higgason Block for 70 years. He is survived by his children Frances (Peter) Greenwood, Douglas G. (Carolyn), Kenneth (Donna), Katherine (Stephen) Grant, Deborah (Steven) Lovrak, and David (Sandra), as well as many grand and great-grand-children, nieces and nephews.
The family sincerely thanks all those for their concerned thoughts and prayers. Our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, was dearly loved and will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a funeral mass at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church, 10021 Jefferson Highway, River Ridge, La., Thursday at 12 PM. Visitation will begin at 11 AM. Interment will be at Lake Lawn Mausoleum.
