Edward Gits

Ed attended Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, before attending Southern Methodist University and ultimately graduating from Louisiana State University with a degree in history.

Some of Ed’s happiest and most cherished memories were made with his family at their summer home in Lake Leelanau, Michigan. His love of the lake continued into his adult life where he shared wonderful times with his wife Pam, his stepchildren and his father-in-law James Cooke, with whom he enjoyed spending time outdoors and jet skiing. Ed was lovingly known by his lifelong friends at the lake as “Steady Eddie.”

Ed was a sentimental and giving man who found meaning in doing thoughtful and beautiful things for others. He was always deeply appreciative of every kindness shown to him. He had an incredible sense of humor and was quick to laugh - often at himself. He never took himself too seriously and had a wonderful ability to make those around him laugh and feel at ease.

Ed was an avid tennis player from childhood through his adult years. Ed loved collecting hot sauces and watches and was always excited to show someone his latest trinket or treasure. He took great pleasure in creating beautiful charcuterie and cheeseboards for the family Christmas Eve celebration. He was a true animal lover, and at one point his household included five dogs, three cats, and fish. The animals he cared for brought him immense joy and, in return, received an abundance of his love and affection.

What defined Ed most was the enormous heart he had for his family and friends. One of his greatest joys was his grandchildren, whom he adored wholeheartedly. Affectionately known as “Obeaux” to his grandchildren, Ed treasured every moment with them. He swam with them, played with them for hours, and delighted in simply being part of their lives. He loved them fiercely and was immensely grateful for the privilege of watching them grow.

Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, Pamela Cooke Gits, who was his partner and best friend; his stepson, Jason Upton (Kacey); his stepdaughter, Stephanie Upton Hostetler (Jonny); and his grandchildren, Logan Upton, Colton Hostetler, Maverick Hostetler, and Bradley Hostetler.

He is also survived by his sisters, Victoria Gits, Susan Gits, and Betsy Gits; and his sisters-in-law and their spouses, Alicia Cooke Winterfeld, Laurie Johnson (Pat), and Jennifer Cooke Talbot (Bobby); his son in law Rob Weaver and many loving extended family members and lifelong friends.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Gits and Lois Rea Gits; his father-in-law, James Cooke; his brother-in-law, William Winterfeld; and his dearly loved stepdaughter, Emily Upton Weaver.

Ed leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, generosity and friendship. He will be remembered for his enormous heart, his wonderful sense of humor and the joy he found in the people and animals he loved.

A private service will be held for the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Louisiana SPCA in Ed’s memory.
