Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 4, 1951, Eileen was the beloved daughter of John and Nelita Gorman Hooper, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a proud 1973 graduate of Loyola University of New Orleans, where she was an active member and President of the Tri Phi sorority. She was the university’s Homecoming Queen in 1971.
Eileen’s professional life reflected her generous spirit—she worked in a variety of roles focused on fundraising and advancement for nonprofit organizations and schools. She began that career at The United Way. She worked at Loyola as Director of the Annual Fund and Alumni Director. She was later the Director of Recruiting and Advancement for the Loyola Institute for Ministry. She ended her career as Director of Donor Relations at the University of Louisville. Her true vocation, however, was serving others. A devout Catholic and Secular Franciscan, Eileen was deeply rooted in her faith. She was certified as a Spiritual Director by the New Orleans Archdiocesan Spirituality Center and was approved to practice within the Diocese of Biloxi by the Bishop where she guided many through their faith journey. She was a devoted member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Pass Christian, where she coordinated the Bereavement Ministry and offered compassion and comfort to countless families.
Outside of her ministry and professional work, Eileen found joy in fellowship and family. She was a member of the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club and as an avid sailor spent numerous days on the water sailing with her husband aboard their yachts “L’ Espiegle” and “Archangel.” She loved traveling with her grandchildren, playing Pokeno, and enjoyed her book club—even when she hadn’t quite finished any of the books. A talented cook and natural host, Eileen delighted in gathering loved ones together—especially through her tradition of planning an annual family beach trip that created treasured memories.
Eileen was truly one of a kind—full of life, warmth, and humor. She never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. Known for her unique turns of phrase—like saying she read a book, “from front to cover” or when referring to her cousin’s wife said, “You know she’s Hungarian, she’s from Hungaria.”—she lit up every room she entered. As an only child, she was doted upon by her parents. She treasured the love of family deeply and joyfully embraced her role as an “outlaw” member of the large Chapoton family.
Eileen is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, Michael David Chapoton; her children, Melissa Chapoton Ridgeway(Collin) and John Charles Chapoton(Christina Caryl); and her beloved grandchildren, Wesley and Lillian Ridgeway, who brought her immense pride and joy.
A visitation will be held at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Pass Christian on November 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. There will be a Funeral Repast following the Mass at the church’s Community Center. A private entombment will follow at a later date.
Eileen’s legacy of faith, laughter, and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.
In remembrance of Eileen’s life, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, charitable donations be made to Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Loyola University of New Orleans. Gifts in Eileen's honor can be made at loyno.edu/tributegift
