On the morning of Sunday, February 21, 2021 at the seasoned age of 95, Elaine LaCroix DuCongé, joined her ancestors, siblings and friends in heaven. A lifelong resident of New Orleans, LA, she was born on July 24, 1925 as the third of four children to the late Edwin J. LaCroix and Edith Fassitt LaCroix. Receiving her education in New Orleans, Elaine was a proud graduate of the McDonogh #35 High School Class of 1942 and Straight Business College.
After graduating from Straight, she worked in clerical bookkeeping positions for the US government at the Port of Embarkation during WW II and later for Domino Sugar Refinery. Following her marriage in 1952, Elaine began her new lifelong calling as homemaker, devoted, nurturing and loving mother and a dutiful caregiver for many of the sick in her family. Known by family and friends for her culinary skills, guests who dropped in or were part of a planned gathering were always assured of a great Creole meal and a little package to take home for a nighttime snack. As her health declined in her later years, she retired her pots and pans, only giving cooking tips to all who asked and spending her days engulfed in her favorite pastime, WordSearch puzzles.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Benedict J. LaCroix, Teresa LaCroix Wheatley and Damian D. LaCroix; and her devoted aunt, Lydia Fassitt Scéau. She is survived by her 3 children, Odile DuCongé-Ramsay, Jacinta DuCongé and Robert DuCongé Jr. of New Orleans LA; devoted son-in-law James E. Ramsay; 4 nieces, Carla E. LaCroix of Dallas TX, Melessa W. Howard (AJ) of Dallas TX, Rochelle L. Wix (Trymane) of Douglasville GA and Angela L. Brade (Verron) of Clarksville MD; one nephew Barré Wheatley of Amarillo TX; one first cousin, Evelyn L. Johnson of Bloomington IL; and numerous extended family members.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend services on Monday, March 1, 2021 at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 2001 Louisiana Avenue, New Orleans LA 70115. Visitation will take place from 9:00am to 10:00am. A mass follows at 10:00 am, Monsignor John Cisewski officiating. A private burial will follow at All Saints Mausoleum. Funeral services are being coordinated by Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home.
In lieu of the usual remembrances, please consider a donation in Elaine’s honor to Hannah’s Klozét Cancer Foundation or the Oblate Sisters of Providence-Baltimore MD.
