Ellsworth “Ell” J.G. Pilié Sr., a proud Marine, and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on Aug 11, 2025 at the age of 97. He was born at Hotel Dieu Hospital in New Orleans on Nov 7th, 1927 to Marion V. Pilie (deceased) and Marguerite I. Pilie (deceased). He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Gerry, of 73 years. Ell’s other loves were golf, big band music, dancing, and trips to the Treasure Chest Casino. He was known by many as the consummate fixer/tinkerer, and there was no project he would not tackle or back down from.
After graduating from Warren Easton High School in 1945, Ell answered the call to serve his country by joining the Marine Corps. While stationed at El Toro Base in Santa Ana California, he served proudly, ultimately achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant, until his discharge in 1952. His time in the Marines instilled in him an enduring sense of honor, discipline and loyalty – values he carried into every chapter of his life.
Following his military service, Ell returned home, and after having careers with South Central Bell, and Local Finance, he would have a long and distinguished career with the United States Postal Service, where he worked as a postal carrier before retiring in 1989.
Family was the center of his world. He is survived by his three children and spouses: Ellsworth (Lynne) Pilie Jr, Glen (Karen) Pilie, and Renee (PJ – deceased) Moody. He had 7 grandchildren: Ellsworth (Shelly) Pilie III, Nicole (Doug) Dellaccio, Edward (Nicole) Pilie, Philip (Lauren) Pilie, Carl (Natalie) Pilie, Patrick (Stephanie) Pilie, and Kaitlyn (Ty) Trahan. He also had 13 great-grandchildren: Cole, Jackson, Douglas, Rory, Elise, Cooper, Avery, Parker, Emily, Iris, Oscar, Cora, and Alexandra.
Ell will be remembered for his deep and unwavering love of his family, his country and local sports. He was a man of quick wit and he would debate anyone that would be willing and up to the challenge. He loved sitting on his porch with a fine cigar, and loved his Louisiana seafood, especially soft-shell crabs.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, August 23rd, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, with a visitation beginning at 8:30 am until 10 am. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10 am. Internment will take place in Lake Lawn Park.
Semper Fidelis, Ell. Your watch is over – rest in peace.
Dad, Paw Paw…night night.
