Elmore A. Chauvin died peacefully at his home on the evening of September 27, 2016. He was 76 years of age and was loved so very much by his wife, Jane Carville Chauvin and his children, Michele Chauvin Hieger and John Carville Chauvin and his wife, Amy. He had one grandchild, whom he adored, Elise Anne Hieger. They, and everyone who knew him, are richer and more joyful because of his presence in their lives. He was born in Houma, LA on February 16, 1940 to Elmore Chauvin and Viley Pellegrin Chauvin, both of whom are deceased. He is survived by his sister, June Chauvin Lecompte and he was predeceased by his brother-in-law, David Lecompte. He also leaves behind the many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law of the Carville family, as well as the nieces and nephews from both the Chauvin and Carville sides of the family who all thought that he was the “fun” uncle. He was raised in Chauvin, LA and was a graduate of Terrebonne High School. He received his undergraduate degree at Notre Dame Seminary and he pursued professional credentialing in the field of Human Resources from the Wharton School of Business. After he retired from many years at Pan American Life Insurance Company and Entergy Corporation, he “reinvented” himself as a tour guide. He had found his true vocation! He studied Louisiana history as a hobby, and was extremely knowledgeable in this field. He took great delight in sharing this knowledge with people from all over the world, particularly at Laura Plantation where he gave tours in French as well as English. Tourists loved him---or so he said! Elmore was unforgettable. He loved to tell jokes, had a quick wit and zany sense of humor, and could make anyone laugh. He loved music, whether appearing as an extra in the operas or singing in the choir at St. Patrick’s Church or going to numerous concerts of all types. The theatre was another passion of his, and he and Jane held tickets to every theatrical venue in town. Over the years he and Jane also traveled extensively, but Elmore loved New Orleans best, and everything that it contained! He was a former member of the Krewes of Olympians and Bacchus, the Round Table Club, the Louisiana Historical Society, the Tour Guide Association, and worked in numerous charitable and civic endeavors. There was very little about life that Elmore didn’t like! The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the wonderful nurses and doctors at Ochsner Medical Center who cared for him throughout his battle with Multiple Myeloma. They took extraordinary care of him! Deepest gratitude is extended to Dr. Chris Theodossiou, who first diagnosed Elmore with cancer, and who followed his case so devotedly, and to Dr. Robert Emmons, the physician who treated him during his second bout with cancer. In the last few days of his life, Passages Hospice caringly ministered to his needs. His sitter, Pam Franklin, was also always there for him. Elmore’s funeral will be held on Friday, October 7, 2016 at St. Francis Xavier Church on Metairie Road, with Visitation from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, followed by the Memorial Mass. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and celebrate his life! In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to St. Joseph Abbey, 75376 River Road, St. Benedict, LA 70457 or Loyola University, 6363 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70118.
