

Elsa Pagoaga Charlie, born June 4, 1943 in El Progreso, Honduras passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at the age of 81. She moved to New York City in 1968 where she had met her future husband Haripersaud Charlie and bore two children. In 1974, the family moved to Kenner, Louisiana and she started working as a substitute teacher at A.C. Alexander Elementary in Kenner, Louisiana. She later received bachelor of education from Tulane University in 1977 and a specialist degree in English as a Second Language (ESL) in 1983. She worked for nearly thirty years as a Jefferson Parish School teacher, specializing in English as a Second Language (ESL). She briefly retired before Hurricane Katrina, but resumed teaching in the post-Katrina teacher drought. In 1978, she founded the ESL Program for the West Bank Jefferson Parish Schools. She was the past president of Louisiana Association of Bilingual Education. Elsa enjoyed knitting, sewing, traveling, and gardening. Elsa is preceded in death by her parents, Teresa Diaz de Pagoaga and Manuel Pagoaga; brothers, Andres Diaz and Alberto Pagoaga. Elsa is survived by her husband of 55 years, Haripersaud Charlie Charitar; sons, Nelson Charlie, M.D. and Hari Charlie; sisters, Elba Pagoaga, Alicia Ochoa, Albertina Pagoaga; brothers, Manuel Pagoaga (Linda), Mario Pagoaga (Lila), and Emil Pagoaga (Gloria). Services will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd New Orleans, LA 70124. Visitation will begin at 12:00PM followed by a Catholic service at 2:00PM.
