Enid was the oldest of three sisters and considered them to be her best friends: Lisa Faust and the late Deborah Faust. Survivors include her youngest sister, Lisa; ex-husband and father of her children, Elroy Eckhardt; her children, Walter G. Eckhardt (Meghan) and Livia Eckhardt Steffee (Sean). Enid was Ya-Ya to her 5 grandchildren that she loved dearly.
Enid attended Ursuline Academy for 13 years and graduated in the Merry Macs of 1964. She received her B.S. from UNO and nearly completed her master’s in biology from the same University. Enid loved Nuclear Medicine and worked at Touro during grad school. Years later, she attended nursing school with her sister, Lisa, and received her RN degree in 1986 from LSU School of Nursing. Enid was a fantastic nurse and caretaker during her extensive nursing career. She did many years of Home Health Hospice and cared deeply about her patients. She lived that wonderful example of care and compassion when she would take her son and daughter every Christmas Eve to a patient’s house to bring gifts, food and love.
In her younger years, when Enid walked into a room everyone stopped and stared. She was truly a striking beauty and loved to make an entrance with her fashion statements. She continued this trend into her elder years. A self-proclaimed “Gypsy”, Enid moved to Sandestin, Florida in 2003. The beach was her true love. It was where her heart resided, and she lived there until 2016 when she moved back to New Orleans to be closer to her sisters. She was an avid sports fan but her favorite was football, and she loved her Saints. Enid was a talented artist and specialized in hand-dyed scarves that she sold through her business, Art Sea Dreams. She utilized her love for art, and whimsical nature, as teaching tools to her children and grandchildren. Enid believed anything in nature could be turned into art: sticks, leaves, seashells, etc. Her artsy nature also coincided with her intuition. A devout Catholic, she still believed in the mystical and would make moon water on nights with a full moon to protect and heal her loved ones. Enid highly venerated Our Lady of Prompt Succor from her Ursuline Academy tenure. She continued that love and devotion to her until the day of her last breath where the statue sat on her windowsill and the holy medal was pinned to her shirt. Another one of her passions was quilting. Her many beautiful quilts were always in her home and some in the homes of her children. Last, but not least, Enid loved to dine out and have a good time with good food and drinks. Some of her favorites were: steak, fried soft shell crab and lemon ice box pie from Tony Angelo’s, and of course Mandina’s for lunch with sazeracs. She loved music and laughter. Her family will always remember her as their Queen Matriarch who was smart, beautiful, outspoken, opinionated, but most importantly, a mother who fiercely loved her children.
