Eugenie Rowena Voorhies Schoenfeld passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, at the age of 86. Born in New Iberia, Louisiana, on January 7, 1940, Genie was reared along with her three siblings in St. Martinville, Louisiana as the cherished firstborn daughter of the late Edward and Rowena Voorhies.
Genie graduated at the top of her class from Our Lady of Mercy High School across from the Evangeline Oak on Bayou Teche, and she earned her Bachelor of Arts degrees in Business Education and English from USL in 1961.
That same year, she traded her small, sleepy French-speaking community in Acadiana for the bustling excitement of New Orleans. She was soon blessed with a marriage of nearly five decades to her husband, Robert Morlas Schoenfeld, whom she married on August 10, 1968 at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church. Together, they built a beautiful family and a remarkable life, surrounded by their four children - Adèle, Ben, Steve, and Morlas - and, later, their families.
Genie was a devoted lady of leisure who loved listening to the music of Freddie Mercury and Engelbert Humperdinck. She never declined an invitation to dine at Galatoire’s with an old fashioned or chardonnay in hand. She loved traveling with the family to the Grand Hotel in Fairhope, Alabama, and teaching all of her boys to dance the Jitterbug and the Cha- Cha to the live music at the Birdcage Lounge. The only thing she was better at than shopping or traveling the world was overpacking for those adventures, firmly believing that every “just in case” item deserved a place in a tote bag.
Genie was a parishioner of Holy Name of Jesus Parish and prayed fervently to Charlene Richard, the Little Saint and young Servant of God from Acadia Parish.
Genie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Morlas Schoenfeld, and her daughter, Adèle Schoenfeld Harlow. She is survived by her three sons, Bennett, Stephen (Melissa), and Morlas (Kristin); her loving grandchildren, Gretchen, Morgan, Miles, Brooks, and Hayes; her sisters, Frances Goliwas of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Rita Lucy Olivier of St. Martinville, Louisiana; and her brother, Danny Voorhies of Metairie, Louisiana. She also leaves behind countless loving relatives and dear friends who will forever cherish her love for conversations about genealogy and her unpredictable spirit.
Although our hearts are broken by her passing, we take comfort in knowing that Genie has been reunited with her husband, Bob, and her daughter, Adèle, in the loving presence of our Lord.
