Evelyn Leopold Heinemann was born May 2, 1927, to Jonas Adrian and Lucille Addison Leopold and passed away Jan. 24, 2026, at 98 years. Graduating from Sophie B. Wright High School, she attended Soule School of Business, then worked for Dun & Bradstreet.
She and her future husband, Hans Heinemann, were literally the girl and boy next door, living on Audubon Street, New Orleans. Evie corresponded with Hans during his WW II service in the U.S. Navy and married afterward. After Hans graduated from Tulane, they spent several years in Marshall, Texas, before returning to New Orleans to spend the rest of their lives. Evelyn was a Red Cross Volunteer, an active member of Shady Oaks Garden club since its founding in 1958, a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of New Orleans, helping lead the singles’ department, and a founder of Faith Baptist Church.
She was a devoted supporter of New Orleans Baptist Seaman’s Service and New Orleans Little Theater. Both Evelyn and Hans were active with the United Cerebral Palsy Association, while tending to the daily care of their daughter, Lisa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hans Norbert Heinemann, and daughter Lisa Ann Heinemann. She is survived by son Norbert Heinemann (Debbie), Karen Heinemann Duncan (Glen), and Gerald Heinemann (Melynn), her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the lights of her life.
Visitation at 9:30 am Monday, Feb. 2; with Service at 10 am, Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home Chapel, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, followed by interment at Metairie Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Evelyn by donating to Global Maritime Ministries, portministry.com/give.
