George Rojas drifted peacefully into spirit on Saturday, May 9, surrounded by family at home. Son of the late Joseph Edwin Rojas and the late Carroll Ann Buhler Rojas, he was a devoted husband & father, a devout Catholic, and a fun-loving New Orleanian.
George attended Sacred Heart of Jesus School, Jesuit High School, and Loyola University. He served in Army Intelligence before running Scheuering Security Service until retiring last summer. A long-time member of the GNOEA and a member of American Legion Metairie Post 175, George also paraded with the Krewe of Endymion for two decades and hosted carnival celebrations at his offices near parade routes Downtown and in Metairie.
A cornerstone of St. Benilde Parish since 1964, George's efforts enriched the church, school, and parishioners’ lives. He represented the parish at the Vatican for St. Benilde's canonization, coordinated Divine Mercy Adoration Chapel activities, served as a reader and Eucharistic minister for decades, and was deeply involved in parish fair activities, Men's Club, and Holy Name Society.
He thrived in leadership roles for parent organizations at Jesuit and Dominican High Schools and for Boy Scout Troop 227. Furthering his commitment to community service, he was a lifelong member of the Dawn Busters Kiwanis Club in Metairie.
He loved to travel, share his culture, laugh, tell stories, and celebrate events with family and friends who immediately felt like family. Wherever he went, he was the life of the party. Family and friends are blessed to have shared in the joy of his life.
George is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joy; his parents; his sister, Joe Ann, and her husband, Ernest Feigler; his brother, Joseph; and his son, Jeffrey. He is survived by his children, Stephen (Rory Centanni), Karen Rojas Terry, and David (Michael Burns); his grandchildren, Francis Rojas, Jeffrey Rojas, and Joel Terry; and his great-granddaughter, Ollie Sue Rojas. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mona Rojas; a throng of cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins; and countless people whose lives he touched along his vibrant 91-year journey.
Visitation will be held at St. Benilde Church on Monday, May 18, 9:30-11:30am, followed by a remembrance at 11:45 and mass at 12:00. Interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
