Geraldine “Gerry” Russell Villarrubia passed away peacefully on Friday, August 22, 2025 at her temporary home in Baton Rouge at the age of 102. Gerry retired from Exxon after 36 years as a secretary, first in the land office and then in the geology department. She loved the LSU Tigers, both football and baseball and the New Orleans Saints and of course, her family.
Auntie Gerry was a lady with a brilliant mind and a loving heart. She loved to tell stories about traveling with Leo while he was training to be a B-17 pilot, and when he returned from WWII, they travelled together for Leo’s job. She had a wonderful and exciting life, and now, she is reunited with the love of her life. We are quite sure she and her sister, Barbara, went shopping as soon as she arrived. She was also an avid animal lover, especially cats (Tiddy-wits and Reddy are lined up for petting time).
She is survived by nephew and caregiver, Mark Russell Normand and his wife, Laura Weaver Normand, by nephews, Neal Villarrubia (Marilyn), Wayne Villarrubia, Kel Villarrubia (Teresa), Stephen Villarrubia (Linda) and Charles Villarrubia, and nieces Lori Martin (Tommy) and Karen Castillo Villarrubia, and other beloved nieces and nephews. She is also survived by the Weaver family that she adopted later in life.
She is preceded in death by her husband and the love of her life, Leo Forest Villarrubia; her parents, Webb and Grace Russell and her sister, Barbara Normand.
We are very grateful to the nurses, aides, chaplains, social workers, and office staff of Compassus Hospice in both Metairie and Baton Rouge. A special thank you to Betty Dixon for the excellent care, love and laughs. Another special thanks to Isabel Aleman for being there when we needed you.
The visitation will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70124 from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. The interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Mark Normand, Neal Villarrubia, Kel Villarrubia, Tommy Martin, Mike Sims and Greg Weaver.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the ASPCA, a local animal shelter, or your local food bank.
