

Gertrude Hollingsworth Mayfield, affectionately known as “Ms. Gertie” gracefully left this world on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She is preceded in death by parents Otard and Scott Hollingsworth, by her husband of 30 years Ernest Mayfield, brother Hillard Hollingsworth, sister Sybil Poole, brother-in-law’s Claude Poole Sr. and Curtis Barrow, and sister-in-law Jean Hollingsworth. She is survived by her son Capt. D. Joe Mayfield (Michelle), daughter Lisa Hilton (Mike), grandson Uriah Hilton (Ashley Arceneaux), granddaughters Amber Hilton, Colleen Mayfield, Collette Mayfield (Matt Stone), sisters Idalia Hollingsworth and Bonnie Barrow, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ms. Gertie was born near Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1929. Her magnanimous energy and vivaciousness inspired all who encountered her. Graduating from Holt High School in Tuscaloosa, she went on to successfully pursue a business program from Perry Business School. After moving to New Orleans and settling in Algiers with her loving husband, together they purchased The Mayfair Lounge in 1978. After his passing in 1983, Ms. Gertie continued to operate the bar for over 40 years. She contributed support to countless patrons, local musicians, students, and artists. She was a member of the Aurora Garden Club where she won numerous awards. She loved to entertain and tell jokes, and was always brightening people’s day with her quick and sly wit. Some of her favorite activities were gardening, staying up to date on current events, redecorating, and spending time with loved ones. She loved shopping, dancing, music, and Jägermeister, but her greatest love was her family and friends.
A private memorial for family will be held on Wednesday, March 23rd. For everyone who wishes to show their respect, there will be a celebration of her life on Saturday, April 2nd, from 4-7pm at The
Mayfair Lounge, 1505 Amelia St., in New Orleans. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Ms.
