Guerre I. Fabacher Sr. passed away on February 4, 2024 at his home in River Ridge. Born on August 1, 1939 in New Orleans, LA., Guerre was the son of the late Hubert A. Fabacher and Mildred Guerre Fabacher. He is preceded in death by his brother, Hubert A. Fabacher, Jr. and his loving wife, Cecelia Daly Fabacher. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes grammar school and graduated from the De La Salle High School where he held the state record for the javelin. He then joined the United States Coast Guard where he was stationed onboard the Dexter. After being honorably discharged he became the owner and operator of Equipment Transport Service. He is survived by his three children, Bridget Fabacher LaForge (Carl), Colleen Fabacher Rude (Roger) and Guerre I. Fabacher II (Holly). He was the best “PaPa” to his ten grandchildren, Carl “Trey” LaForge, Lauren LaForge, Taylor LaForge, Luke LaForge, Laine LaForge and Leah LaForge, Tristan Rude, Logan Rude, Faith Fabacher and Guerre “Buddy” Fabacher III.
He was married to his beloved wife for thirty-six years until her death in 2001. The couple raised their three children in a log cabin on three acres in the heart of River Ridge which was also home to ducks, turkeys, goats, chickens, horses, cows, bulls, geese, rabbits, dogs and a twelve-foot alligator named Pete. The alligator was caught by Guerre as a young boy and the gator could fit into a shoe box. Commonly known in the River Ridge as “Mountain Man,” he was certainly a root of the community. Chopping wood to keep the log cabin warm by firing up the two wood burning stoves and two fire places was part of their lives. Guerre’s hobbies included hunting on horseback in the mountains of Colorado, playing tennis, hosting large parties at the log cabin and vacationing with his family. The ten grandchildren were without a doubt the highlight of his life. Their pictures lined the walls inside his home. Papa was so proud of all of them.
The “shack” in Mississippi was his escape and his little slice of heaven. A peaceful place in the woods with two log cabins and the beautiful Wolf River running through it was the perfect gathering spot for making unforgettable memories. There he taught his children and grandchildren how to hunt, fish and enjoy the wilderness. Papa will always be remembered for his long beard, rustic way of life, cowboy boots, alligator Pete, riding his horse into the bank and the tremendous amount of love and time he gave to his family. According to Mack Zito, Guerre was the “Rock” of River Ridge.
The funeral service will be held on February 17, 2024 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA. Visitation will be from noon until two o’clock with mass following. Interment will be in Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Guerre would probably suggest to treat yourself to a delicious fried shrimp po-boy from Mandinas.
