Gustave Olaf Hotstream Jr., age 80, of Metairie, LA passed away on Friday, April 23, 2021 of end stage congestive heart failure. He was born on October 10, 1940 in New Orleans and is preceded in death by his parents Gustave Hotstream Sr. and Rita Spizale Hotstream.
Gus is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Helen Diane Griffin Hotstream and his children, Elizabeth Hotstream Mire and Michael Steven Hotstream. He is also survived by his sisters, Dolores Hotstream Schroeder (Robert), Mary Ann Hotstream, Deborah Hotstream Delaune (Robert), brother, Ronald Joseph Hotstream, his father-in-law, Steve Pershing Griffin, sisters-in law, Darryl Griffin Garner, Janice Griffin Nick (Robert) and many nieces and nephews. He is also preceded in death by his son-in-law, David Christopher Mire, his mother-in-law, Helen Tobin Griffin, and his brother-in-law, J.C. Garner.
Gus graduated from De La Salle High School and Delgado Community College. He worked in the composing room of the Times Picayune and in later years, at the University of New Orleans Newman Center. He loved gardening, maintaining his vintage 1963 Impala, and cheering for the New Orleans Saints.
Gus was a devoted husband and father. He will be missed by all who knew him, especially “The Cheap Thrills Gang” and his friends at The People Program, the EJ Wellness Center, The UNO Newman Center, and his volleyball friends from younger years. Gus was a parishioner of St. Angela Merici Catholic Church and attended Manresa retreats for many years. He had a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to the holy rosary.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Greg Tilton and the nurses and staff at East Jefferson General Hospital, Department of Cardiology for 25 years of expert cardiac care. The family expresses gratitude to Pulse Home Health and Anvoi Hospice for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, Masses may be offered or donations can be made to the American Heart Association. Due to COVID-19, a private funeral Mass will be celebrated with Fr. Clayton “Beau” Charbonnet officiating. Condolences may be expressed online at www.lakelawnmetairie.com.
