On Sunday, August 5, 2018, the oldest member of our family left us to join the choir of angels in heaven. Hannah was born in Carnarvon, Iowa 103 years ago, but lived most of her life in Metairie, Louisiana. She was surrounded by her loving family, and to the last moment, she offered us inspiration just like she did for decades. Appointed in 1951 by President Eisenhower to be the Postmaster of Metairie, she had energy to spare. As a founding member of The Jefferson Performing Arts Society, she gave us the joy of witnessing her amazement at the opening of the most modern performing arts theater in the city. She was an active member of the Munholland United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. Her smile and inspiring energy leaves a void amongst all of those who had the privilege to be around her. Oma, your love, your smile, your glee and your tenacity will be with us for hundreds more years. She was preceded in death by her first husband Joe Hughes, her second husband Murray Cunningham, son Hunt Cunningham, daughter Janet Cunningham and grandson Beau Baker. She is survived by her children Kay Gillum, Karay Klein, Mary Beth Nogues, Fred Cunningham and Debbie Rubiano. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services for Hannah will be at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Sunday, August 19th at 2:00pm. A gathering of family and friends will be held after the service at her home. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Jefferson Performing Arts Society, 1118 Clearview Parkway, Metairie, Louisiana 70001.
