What a dear, sweet man Mr. Hank was. I first met the Hyla family when I started teaching at Marie Riviere Elementary in Bucktown in the early 90's. He and Mrs.Hyla were volunteer grandparents. Mrs. Hyla worked in the Library and Mr. Hank was all over the place....helping out wherever he was needed. I always felt he was responsible for the large United States map that was painted on our playground blacktop. His grandson Adam was so proud of them both.Mr.Hank loved his family so much. I was delighted to learn that the Hyla's were my neighbors when I bought my house in Bucktown. Through the years many an hour was spent in the late afternoon chatting away with the neighbors that gathered on the stoop at Ben Bernard's place. Hank was one of the pleasant, humorous men I've ever met. He always had a joke to share with us. Mr. Hank also saw to it that our neighborhood was always kept clean and tidy ....free of litter of any kind. Everybody loved Mr.Hank. I was especially impressed to know he played semi pro football in his younger days. I always told him that beside my Dad he was the most handsome Polish man I'd ever met! Mr.Hank was a much loved man. He will be greatly missed.
