With heavy hearts, mixed with a good dose of laughter, we announce the passing of Henry “Jay” Wickes, who left this world a little earlier than expected but not without leaving a trail behind of a lifetime of wild stories and unforgettable memories. Born on September 24, 1953, Jay as he was known to friends (“Baby Jake” if you were family), fully lived a life that was equal parts chaos and love—with just enough trouble to keep things interesting. Jay had an uncanny ability to find mischief. From getting into questionable situations to making a routine out of bending (or flat-out breaking) the rules, he never met a boundary he didn’t want to test. But despite his knack for misadventures, his heart was bigger than any trouble he ever caused.
Whether it was his offbeat sense of humor, his elaborate and often bizarre stories, or his wild antics, Jay knew how to keep someone entertained. If you lived near him, you probably heard that unmistakable horn blast. If you needed a ride—or just someone to listen, even if it was in between honks and wild stories—Jay was there. No questions asked, with only a little judgement. Jay checked in weekly, if not daily, with family and close friends, always interested in our adventures while keeping you up to date on some crazy thing that happened to him. He was the one who always remembered birthdays, or just a random “holiday”, to check in and see how you were doing. If you didn’t pick up the phone, expect a second, or maybe a partially illegible text message to follow.
Jay leaves behind family and friends who will miss his wild spirit, his caring nature, and his ability to entertain. Though he may have been a “troublemaker” at times, his love was the kind that never wavered. Rest in peace, Baby Jake. You’ve finally left us—but we know you’ll still be causing trouble in the great beyond while rocking out to classic rock. And while we’ll miss your wild ways, we take comfort knowing you’re probably having a wild time up there, with a grin on your face and a story ready to go. We’re better for having had you in our lives.
Henry “Jay” Wickes passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the age of 72. Jay is survived by his niece Jill W. Poché (James); great nephews Dustin Poché (Mandy) and James Poché, Jr. (Lindsey); great niece Emily P. Barlow (Jermey); as well as nine great-great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Felicie Wickes; and siblings: Georgeann Weiser, Bettie Jo Prats, and Thomas Marie.
Please join us in celebrating the life of Jay on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Hog’s Alley, located at 115 Focis St., Metairie, LA 70005. A private burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, we’re asking that you honk your horn at least once today. Jay would’ve done it for you.
