Irene Mary Munster Long passed away peacefully at her son's family home on May 4, 2021 at the age of 94, experiencing a long, full life. She was born on May 19, 1926 in New Orleans to the late Hilda Dantagnan Munster and Joseph John Munster. She was a devoted housewife and homemaker, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a devoted Catholic and parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church. She was active in the local community, doing her part as a Girl Scout leader at Holy Rosary School and a volunteer at Hotel Dieu Hospital. She had a talent for playing tennis for many years and even traveled to professional tournaments.
Growing up in depression-era Gentilly to a family of very modest means, she had a passion for having fun and making the best of any situation. Even her weekly trips to the "beauty parlor" were looked on as a party. Irene made friends wherever she went, and was the opposite of a wallflower at social gatherings. She loved playing poker and bridge with her sisters and friends and was a regular world-traveler, having been to 5 continents in her lifetime. "If you are not having fun , it's your own fault!"
She is preceded in death by: her husband of 34 years, Ralph Henry Long; her parents; and her sisters, Althea Mirambell and Joan Paillot. She is survived by: her daughter, Margaret Long Alley; son-in law Stephen James Alley; her son, Ralph Henry Long, Jr., daughter-in-law Rebecca Hug Long; her sisters, Sonja Kooke, and Karen Ronquillo; her grandchildren, Kevin James Alley, Alexander Henry Long, Mason William Long, Eric James Alley, Rachel Lee Alley, and Madeleine Hug Long; her great-grandchildren, Mason Long, II, August Long, Charlie Long, Lola Irene Long, Hadley Long, Rowan Long, Penelope Alley, and Winter Long; and her ‘surrogate’ grandchildren G. Mark McGregor and Cooper McGregor.
A visitation will take place on Thursday, May 13th, 2021 at St. Pius X Church at: 6666 Spanish Fort Blvd, in New Orleans at 12:00 noon, followed by a 1:00 p.m. funeral mass. Interment will take place at St. Patrick №.3 in New Orleans, and Fr. Pat Williams will be officiating.
