A lifelong resident of the New Orleans metro area, Jim was born in New Orleans on December 21, 1946 of the late James Anatole Bourg, Sr. and Agnes Louise Bourg, and grew up in the Irish Channel before moving to Metairie. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Jeanne Favret Bourg, three loving sons and their wives, Jason (Maris), Jonathan (Michelle), and Jameson (Katie), and eight adoring grandchildren, Elizabeth, Harrison, Thomas, Coleman, Ronan, Caroline, Genevieve “Ginny”, and Claire. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Bourg. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert Bourg, and his grandparents Joseph Charles Bourg, Lucy Marie Talbot, Oliver Joseph Young and Anna Mary Francis Rappold.
Education was Jim’s life-long passion. His career began as a chemistry teacher at Redemptorist High School and ended as a statistics teacher at Brother Martin High School. In between, Jim had a rewarding 33-year career with Hewlett-Packard (and later Agilent Technologies) serving as a quality manager in his last 15 years with the company. During his career in business, Jim cherished the opportunity to teach, speaking glowingly of his time in Singapore providing training to his fellow employees abroad. Jim received a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Louisiana State University at New Orleans and a Masters of Quality Management from Loyola University.
Jim’s passion for learning and teaching extended well beyond the classroom and his career. He was an avid genealogist and after forty-five years of studying his family history published “Bourgs, Talbots, Youngs, Rappolds, Favrets, Landrys, Develles, Jungs, and Dehebecourts: A Gumbo History of Families Forming a New Orleans Culture.” He had countless other hobbies that he shared with his family and friends. He was a woodworker, crafting numerous pieces of furniture throughout his and his family’s homes; a brewer who bottled several batches of Bourg’s Beer in the 90s; a bonsai artist; a ceramist; a disc jockey; and a singer/songwriter, who would liven any event with his guitar. Jim loved to read and debate, and he cherished routine “coffee conversations” with his family and friends. He also enjoyed the outdoors and during his time as a Scout Master led an expedition to Philmont Scout Ranch joined by his son Jameson.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 105 Bonnabel Blvd. Metairie, LA 70005 on Monday, February 22, 2021 at 1:00pm. Visitation will begin at 11:30am. Interment will be private.
