

James William Lewis passed away peacefully on July 17, 2024, at Passages Hospice in New Orleans, La. at the age of 78. Born on June 20, 1946, in New Orleans, Jim was predeceased by his partner of 36 years, Richard T. Powell 3rd, and his parents James Edgar Lewis and Pauline Allen Lewis. He was a lifelong resident of New Orleans, known for his dedication to education and the arts.
Jim earned both a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in education, a testament to his passion for learning and teaching. For 35 years, he taught art at Rowley Elementary School in Chalmette, La., where he inspired countless students with his creativity and love for the arts. Jim's commitment to his profession extended beyond the classroom, as he actively participated in the Amon Ra carnival organization, bringing his artistic talents to the community.
Jim's generous spirit and love for people, especially children were evident in every aspect of his life. He was a loving brother to Robert Michael Lewis and leaves behind an extended family of cousins and loyal friends who became like family, including Anthony Clark and his dear friend of over 40 years, Dee Strickland.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate doctors and staff at Touro Hospital, particularly those on the 8 floor heart care unit, and the loving staff at Passages Hospice.
Services will be held on August 9, 2024, at 1:00 PM at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, located at 1031 Carrollton Ave., New Orleans, Louisiana. Jim's ashes will be interred at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Gulf Breeze, Florida, at a later date.
Jim will be deeply missed by all that knew him, but his legacy of creativity, generosity, and faith will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
