James "Jimmy" Poché

A husband, father, Paw Paw, brother, uncle, and friend, Jimmy’s family meant everything to him, and he was incredibly proud of the people he loved. He was sentimental in his own way, even if he sometimes had a funny or unconventional way of showing it. There was never any doubt that he loved his family… if only slightly more than his plants.

He is survived by his wife, Jill; his children, James (Lindsey), Dustin (Mandy), and Emily (Jeremy); and his grandchildren, Mia, Madison, Bryce, Hudson, Jude, Camille, Joseph, Alyssa, and Gionna. He is also survived by his sister, Sandy (George); his nephews, Kenny, Jason, Danny, Chris, and Ryan; and his beloved dog, Ziggy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anne and Oscar, and his brothers, James and Joe.

Jimmy will be remembered for his sense of humor and his ability to make people laugh. He was a jokester who loved giving people a hard time, making a sarcastic comment, or saying something just to get a reaction. He had a big personality and was never afraid to share his opinion, usually with complete confidence that he was right. He could be strong-willed, a little impatient, and set in his ways, but those qualities were simply part of the larger-than-life personality his family and friends knew and loved.

Jimmy also had a true love for plants. What began as an interest in 1984 became a major part of his life, and he spent years running Plumeria Insanity Nursery. He loved growing plants, caring for them, talking about them, and sharing that passion with others. He could spend hours among his plants and was happiest when he was working with something he had grown himself. If you spent enough time around Jimmy, there was also a pretty good chance you were going to hear about a plant whether you asked or not.

Jimmy believed strongly in giving his time to others. Over the years, he volunteered countless hours and believed in being involved, helping where he could, and doing his part for the people and communities around him. Giving his time was simply another way he showed how much he cared.

Above all, Jimmy loved his family. He was proud of his children, adored his grandchildren, and loved having his family around him. He took great pride in their lives and accomplishments and was always ready to tell someone about them, likely before they even had a chance to ask.

His family and friends will miss his humor, his stories, his opinions, his love of plants, and the unmistakable personality that made Jimmy who he was. Most of all, they will remember how deeply he loved his family and how proud he was of the people closest to him.

He was deeply loved, will be greatly missed, and will never be forgotten.

The family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of the MICU at Ochsner Hospital for the compassion, care, and kindness they showed Jimmy and his family during his final days. A very special thank you goes to his best friend, Anita, who never left Jimmy or Jill’s side and whose love, support, and presence meant more than words can express.

Funeral services will be held on September 10, 2026, at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard, New Orleans, Louisiana 70124. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with Mass beginning at 1:00 p.m. A private burial for the family will follow.

In keeping with Jimmy’s love of plants, those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to buy a plumeria or other tropical plant, or plant a flower or tree in his memory. Jimmy would probably rather you start gardening in his honor than buy flowers just for the ceremony.
