James J. Rivers

He is survived by daughters Countess and Wanda Rivers; sisters, Betty Merrill, Ella Rivers, and Sandra Rivers. Sister-in-law Joy Gray and brother-in-law Matthew Sharper and his loving nephew, Roland Gray, Jr., along with numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

James was preceded in death by his wife Camille Virginia Rivers, his parents Earnest Rivers, Sr. and Noella Fox Rivers Victorin, and brothers Herbert and Earnest Rivers, Jr.

James was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 18, 1937, and attended Craig Elementary School and Booker T. Washington High School.

The family extends their deepest gratitude and appreciation for the outpouring of prayers, love and support they have received during this difficult time.

Relatives, friends, and employees of Royal Sonesta Jazz Playhouse, Parlay's Bar, East Jefferson Hospital, West Jefferson Hospital (Bridgepoint) and Oschner Foundation Hospital are invited to attend the funeral services at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, Louisiana on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
