Jesse was born in New Orleans, LA on October 12, 1941, the only child of the late Angelina Maggiore and Lee Joseph Melancon. Although he was an only child, he never felt like one because of the love of his large Melancon family. He met the unequivocal love of his life, Jeanne Marie “Tiny” Veron, in September of 1964. They were married on August 19, 1967, and celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this year.
Jesse’s life with Jeanne was made whole by his children and grandchildren: David and his late wife Laura (Tatar) and their children Madeline, Michael and Justin; Brian and Monique (Plauche) and their children Paige and Sam; and Elizabeth and George Kuchler and their children Julia, Ellie and Jack. He had the added bonus of his unofficially adopted son, Doug Hernandez, whom he loved and cherished as his own, as well as six Collins step-grandchildren and 1 step-great grandchild, when David married Jennifer Babin Collins.
Jesse was affectionately known as Positive Pops. He began every day by writing in his gratitude journal, intentionally listing his prayer requests and hopes for the day and giving thanks for the blessings in his life. The morning of his death, he wrote faithfully and perhaps prophetically in his journal about support and acceptance. Even to the end, Jesse could always find the light in every situation.
He had a deep abiding faith and an avid devotion to Mary, especially Our Lady of Lourdes. His experience of healing in Lourdes had a profound impact on his life. It is most appropriate that he died during one of his favorite months, October, the month of the Rosary. He also revered the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, and he and Jeanne spent many years as Team Leaders for Marriage Encounter.
Jesse was incredibly proud of his service in the US Army as a military policeman. While stationed in Germany, he traveled throughout Europe, which was the beginning of his lifelong love of travel.
Professionally, he was a market manager for Ideal Cement Company. His work ethic permeated every part of his life.
Jesse was an enthusiastic participant in many groups with many close friends. The Good Timers just celebrated their 19th year together. He and Jeanne also enjoyed their rosary group, scripture study, and card groups. Jesse was also famous for his upbeat, encouraging emails. He was always looking for ways to connect people socially, intellectually, or spiritually.
He made an indelible mark on the lives of everyone he met. He was larger than life while remaining humble of heart. His outlook on life and positive, joyful spirit will be greatly missed by all.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 10:30-12:15 at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Words of Remembrance will begin at 12:15, followed by his funeral Mass. A private burial will take place at a later date.
