Jocelyn “Jackie” Mercedes Knecht passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at age 90. Jackie was born in New Orleans on March 8, 1931 to the late Francis “Frank” Knecht and Esther Hale Knecht. She graduated from Sophie B. Wright Training School when she was younger and as an adult worked for the Godchaux’s department store warehouse. Jackie was a parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena in Metairie and a member of Magnificat and Catholic Daughters. Although she never married, Jackie was a beloved second mother to her sister’s brood of seven children, the Wadge family. She was an integral loving member of the large family, sharing laughter, tears, and celebrations throughout our lives. As great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews came along, she cherished every moment with them, knew all their birthdays and always had a gift for each one. She loved nothing more than big family gatherings where she could see and talk to everyone. Like any good New Orleanian, she really enjoyed all types of seafood and any parade she could get to - as much for the flavor and fun as for the gathering with family and friends. Later in life Jackie showed her artistic flair with beautiful ceramic artwork which she gave to many as a token of love.
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Catherine Gloria Mae Knecht Wadge; brothers, Ronald Knecht, Frank Knecht, Jr., Gerald Knecht, Norbert Knecht, and Thomas Knecht; and nephews, Michael Knecht and Frank Knecht, III. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Geralyn Toujas (Andy), Gary Wadge (Barbara), Geanie Margavio (Tommy), Gordon Wadge (Mary), Glen Wadge (Belle), Glorian Sossamon (Jerry), Gyl Switzer (Tony), Ronald Knecht, Jr. (Jan), William Knecht (Sheri), Hyland Knecht (Susan), Katherine Ayme (Richard), Paul Knecht (Gail), Peter Knecht (Julie), Joseph Knecht (Jane) and lots of great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews as well as many dear cousins and close family friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass on Monday, April 5, 2021 at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, 105 Bonnabel Blvd. Metairie, beginning at 11am with the public visitation at 9:45 am until the time of the Mass. Interment will follow the Mass and take place in Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans.
