John S. Barbara, Jr.

John Samuel Barbara, Jr entered peacefully into Heaven on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at the age of 93. Beloved husband of Shirley Barbara. Loving father of Dr. John S. Barbara III (Danielle), Marianne Fry (Harley), and Diane Bourgeois (Mike). Adoring grandfather of 12 grandchildren, J.D. (Angie), Benjamin, Daniel (Krista), Blake (Kristin), Travis, Mariesa, Rebecca (Chesley), John IV, Brian, Rachel (Jordan), Joshua (Emily), and Mitchell, as well as brother of Betty. He was also blessed with 12 great-grandchildren. Preceded in Heaven by his parents, John Barbara, Sr. and Hellen Salter, sisters Gert and Sis, and wife Shirley Fernandez Barbara. Johnny was born in New Orleans, attended Aloysius High School and Loyola University, and was the recipient of the St. Louis Award for his contributions as a representative of St. Christopher Church of Metairie. A devout Christian and Navy Veteran, he always put his family first. He will forever be loved and missed by all who knew him. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of Notre Dame Home Health, Hospice Associates, and all the staff and administration at Serenity Senior Residence for all their loving care and compassion. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, on Thursday, June 22, 2023, at 12:00pm. A visitation will begin at 11:00am. A graveside service will follow Mass at All Saints Mausoleum.
