

John Villars Baus passed away at his home on January 7, 2016, surrounded by his family. John was born in New Orleans on December 29, 1927, to Rosemary Villars and Rene Baus. He is preceded in death by his first wife of 27 years, Mary Walker Baus and her parents John Mort and Marie Walker. He is survived by his current wife of 36 years, Mary Adele Provosty Baus; his four children – Stephanie Ann, John Villars, Jr. (Debbie Doyle), Mort Walker (Donna Weisler), and Janet Walker Baus; three step-children – Beau Tardy (Mara Marich), Mary Adele B. Rosepink, and Etienne Tardy (Stacy Vanderbrook); and 13 grandchildren – Kat, Mary Walker, Jack, John Walker, Ella, Ellison, Apollo, TJ, Mark, Mimi, Sebastien, Sydney and Ethan. His only surviving brother, Bernard V. Baus, resides in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is predeceased by his two brothers, Rene V. Baus and George V. Baus. He graduated from Tulane with a Bachelor of Science in 1947 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1951. He was an attorney at Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitevent, Carrere, & Denegre, from 1951 until his retirement as Senior Partner. He served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force J.A.G. Corps from 1952-1953. He was a 60 year member of the Louisiana State Bar, and admitted to the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, Federal Courts of Appeals of the 5th, 11th and D.C. Circuits, the Supreme Courts of Louisiana and Texas, and the Supreme Court of the United States of America. He was a proud member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a Fellow in the International Society of Barristers, and a life member of the Federal Bar Foundation. He served on the Board of the Urban League. He was active in several Carnival organizations, including the Stratford Club, the Pickwick Club, the Crescent Club, and the School of Design. John was a devout Catholic. In his later years, he and Mary Adele enjoyed dividing their time between New Orleans and the South of France, although his heart was always here in Louisiana. John's greatest joys were his family, gardening, boating, and his French Quarter home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at IMMACULATE CONCEPTION JESUIT CHURCH, 130 Baronne St. at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2016. Visitation will be held at the church, beginning at 9:00 a.m. For those so desiring, memorials in honor of John Villars Baus may be made to The Good Shepherd School, 353 Baronne St., New Orleans, LA 70112. The Good Shepherd School is a mission school for at risk students here in New Orleans.
