John Whitney Carter

He was born in New Orleans, LA on January 6, 1937. He was predeceased by his mother, Antonia deLaVega Carter and his children, Michael Patrick Carter and Elizabeth Ann Carter. He is survived by four grandchildren, Gabrielle H. McGowan, Bethany M. Carter, Kyle P. Carter, Cody J. Carter, and two great grandchildren, Maxwell McGowan and August McGowan. He is also survived by his brother Ray Carter, his nieces Genie C. Powers and Suzy C. Sharp, his ex-wife Bradley W. Walthall, and cousins, great nieces and nephews.

John lived most of his life in the New Orleans area, and lived also in Los Angeles, CA, returned to Metairie and spent his final years in Mandeville, LA living at the Windsor Senior Community. He attended Fortier High School, followed by three years in the Marine Corp. of which he was very proud. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant (E4).

John’s work career was varied. He was a warehouse manager for shipping companies, a security officer for Warner Bros., and a singer in musical theater and for weddings and other occasions.

Besides the love for his children and family, his other great love was music. From opera to Broadway to pop, and from Mario Lanza to Kelly Clarkson, he loved it all. He appreciated good talent, TCM movies and the world of entertainment. God gifted John with a beautiful tenor voice. In his youth, he starred in several local musicals and was a former member of the New Orleans Symphony Chorus. He loved sports, especially Saints, LSU and Tulane football, and loved his New Orleans good food, coffee and chicory, and beignets.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, LA on Tuesday, September 9th, 2025, from 10a – 12p followed by a brief interment service in All Saints Mausoleum.
