John Michael Durel Sr.

On September 11, 2024 we lost a cherished family member when John Michael Durel Sr. unexpectedly went to be with our Lord and Savior. John was born on May 9, 1946 to the late Aline and Oliver Durel Jr. Survived by his brother Arthur Durel Sr.(Patricia), his sons John Durel Jr. and Jason Durel(Lenorah) and his granddaughters whom he loved and would do anything for, Mackenzie Durel and Madison Durel, who called him Granddad. He was also survived by his second wife Cynthia T. Durel, who helped to take care of him the last few years of his life. Preceded in death by his sister Aline Durel and brothers Oliver Durel III, Charles Durel Sr. and Ronald Durel Sr. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John was a heavy equipment operator from local 406 with his closest friend Joe Barry until a work accident rendered him disabled. He was the baby of the family and had no problem telling his five siblings so. John was a free spirit who always marched to his own drum and did what he pleased. No one could tell him otherwise until June of 2013 when his two bosses(granddaughters) were born and set him straight.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Thursday, September 19, 2024 from 11 to 2, mass to follow in chapel, at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd New Orleans, LA 70124. John requested this to be a casual event so feel free to dress comfortably.

Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery on Monday, September 23, 2024 at 1PM.
