John “Jay” Joseph Fenerty, III, aged 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 17, 2025. An attorney and lifelong resident of the New Orleans area, Jay was born October 8, 1948, to John Fenerty, Jr. and Anna Plegat Fenerty.
Jay’s life was deeply interwoven with the unique spirit of New Orleans. He was a proud graduate of Jesuit High School and Loyola University New Orleans, establishing roots in the community that would last a lifetime. He was a dedicated member of the New Orleans Yacht Club and even served as its Commodore, fostering community and camaraderie among fellow sailors.
Beyond the water, Jay's pursuits were many: he was an enthusiastic tennis player, enjoyed trips to the Caribbean, and took great pride in grilling the perfect steak. He was an avid reader and lover of literature—a daily reader of the Times-Picayune, always ready to share an article or spark a healthy debate. His sharp wit and sense of humor brought smiles and laughter, and he is remembered for his generosity, spirited discussions, and genuine friendship.
Jay is survived by his daughter, Katherine “Katie” Fenerty-Lanphere (Brad); his son, John “Jack” Joseph Fenerty, IV (Katelyn); former wife, Sally; his brothers, Thomas Fenerty and Joseph Fenerty (Cindy); and nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved members of the Fenerty family.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 26th at 10 a.m. at Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, 70124. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to leave your favorite memory of Jay or make a donation to the American Lung Association.
The family thanks you for your condolences and the cherished memories you have shared. Jay’s legacy of thirst for knowledge, loyalty, and lively debate will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
