John Adrian Gordon, Jr., passed away Monday, November 14, 2022 in his home in New Orleans surrounded by his family. Although John was born and raised in New Orleans, he treasured his summers spent in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi and felt most at home there with family and friends.
John graduated from De La Salle High School where he was a member of the sailing and wrestling teams and later from the University of New Orleans. Following his graduation, John became a landman traveling throughout many Louisiana Parishes. Although John was a man of few words to most people, John was stimulated by his conversations in the field and working with landowners and mineral interest owners… some even saying how talkative John was, to the surprise of many!
John’s happy place was the outdoors and all that it offered; from his summers sailing and waterskiing with friends and family in Bay St. Louis, to his winter adventures exploring Alaska, to his spring fishing trips. But, two outdoor “adventures” held a special place in John’s heart: preparing and sitting in his duck blinds in freezing, wet weather with his beloved dad and buddies, H.J., Quint, Doug, Beau, Chuck, and Jordan - ducks or no ducks - and riding on the front of the Krewe d’Etat float waving to the adoring Mardi Gras crowds!
John was a member of many organizations, but particularly enjoyed Athenians, the Bienville Club, the Elves of Oberon, and his beloved Krewe d’Etat.
John is survived by his sister, Betsy, his cousins and best friends, Mary Elizabeth and H. J. Platt, and their children, Ellie, and her husband, Greg Kass, and Jordan and his wife, Sadie; his uncle, Beau Lapeyre; his aunt, Evie Gordon; and numerous other cousins and friends… and, of course, his four-legged, “bestest” companion, Jiggy. He was predeceased by his adoring parents, Jack and Betty Anne Gordon; his loving grandparents, Elizabeth and Fernand Lapeyre, and Marie and William Raymond Gordon; and his aunt and uncles, Kay Hanson, Carroll Gordon, and William Gordon.
John’s family would like to thank Warren and Laurie Doyle and all of his friends and co-workers at Doyle Land Services and Robert Javers for their kindness, love, and support, and extend a special thanks to all of the doctors, nurses, and sitters whose care and compassion were essential to John’s remarkable nine-year battle with colon cancer.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Monday, November 21, 2022 at noon. The visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. The interment will follow the Mass at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. A reception will immediately follow the interment at the Event Center of the funeral home.
