

John "Jack" Edgar Litchfield, age 94, of Metairie, Louisiana: Atlanta, Georgia; and Liverpool, England, died from natural causes on January 29, 2015. He was born November 29, 1920 in Prescot (Liverpool), England. He is preceded in death by his father, Edgar Litchfleld, and mother Florence Litchfield née Garner, and by his wife, Sheila Litchfield née Usher. He is survived by four children: E. John Litchfield, of Metairie, Louisiana; Jean Gedicke of Kenner, Louisiana; Margaret Ashley of Metairie, Louisiana; and David Litchfield of Lilburn, Georgia. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Jack was a former 3rd Radio Officer in the British Merchant Navy. On June 4, 1942, 750 miles Northeast of Natal, Brazil, the German armed merchant cruiser Stier attacked his ship, the SS Gemstone, and took the crew as prisoners of war. Jack spent the next 3.5 years in a Japanese concentration camp. For many years he worked for the British consulates in New Orleans, Boston, and Atlanta. For a short time, he worked for the British Embassy in Washington D.C. before returning to and retiring from the consular posts. He was a great story-teller, loved soccer, and had a wonderful wit and sense of humor. Interment will be private. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans is in charge of arrangements.
