John was a New Orleans original - a graduate of Isidore Newman School (Class of '64) and Williams College (Class of '68) - who spent his career in the industrial supply business and his retirement doing what he arguably did best: showing up for other people. Through volunteer work at City Park, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, Start the Adventure in Reading (STAIR), and Hotel Hope, he gave his time generously and without fanfare. He was a devoted member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in New Orleans and St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Decatur, Georgia, both of which had the good sense to keep him busy. When he wasn't volunteering, he was fishing. The fish didn't always cooperate, but that never seemed to slow him down.
John was the son of the late June Coney Kinabrew and J.M. (Jack) Kinabrew, Jr. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 28 years, Carolyn Wood Kinabrew - a woman of deep and abiding faith who set a standard he spent the rest of his life trying to honor.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Catherine Dyer Kinabrew; his sons John Kinabrew IV (Amy) and Christopher Kinabrew (Jackie); his daughter Suzi Kukucka (Wayne); his step-daughters Helen Bouzon (Shaun) and Catherine Bouzon Martinez (Eric); and his grandchildren Maggie, Jonas, Kira, Lulu, Elle, Justin, and Miles - seven very good reasons he kept showing up.
A celebration of John's life will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home. Visitation will precede the service from 12-2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, Hotel Hope, or Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church - three organizations that meant a great deal to John and will carry his spirit forward.
