John graduated from high school and joined the Greek Air Force in 1949. In 1953, while stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi Keesler Air Force base and also in Denver, Colorado, he met the love of his life, Mary Mariakis of New Orleans at the Greek Orthodox Church. They were married on October 31, 1953. Mary and John lived in Greece until he was discharged from the service. In 1955 they moved back to New Orleans where John opened his own TV repair business. John studied TV repair at the Gulf Radio School, a 3-year program that he finished in 9 months because of his extensive knowledge of electronics. Business boomed and John hired two assistants in the first year. He proudly became a US citizen in 1959.
The family grew with Tina in 1960, Katherine in 1961, Helen in 1963, and Frankie in 1965. In 1977 the family moved from their Bell Street home in New Orleans to 4909 Sunny Place in Metairie. John was very proud of the fact that he personally drew up plans and remodeled the new extended den where they had lots of parties.
John and Mary had a busy and enjoyable life together. John was a longtime member of the Greek Orthodox community and member of the Ahepans and he served in numerous leadership roles there. The family took many trips back to Greece to stay connected with his relatives there. John owned a boat and loved taking it out on Lake Pontchartrain. He also loved playing cards with all his friends and backgammon and participating in the Greek Festivals. Friends and family were the most important aspects of his life. He deeply loved all his children and grandchildren, and most especially he loved his wife, Mary. In his later years he treasured sitting next to his “sweetheart,” holding her hand and reminiscing about the beautiful life that had together and all his trips to Greece to visit family. He leaves behind a great legacy of family and friends who treasure his life and who miss him dearly.
