John J. Schmitt

John J. Schmitt passed away on January 13, 2026 at 83 years of age. He was born on August 11, 1942 in New Orleans, LA. John retired as a Captain with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office after 29 years of service.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Carolyn “Suzie” Fuhrmann; parents, Oscar and Mary Schmitt; son, Brent Schmitt; sisters, Margaret Schimtt and Ethyl Graves; brothers, Oscar Schmitt and Frank Schmitt; and grandchild, Alexander Cawood.

John is survived by his daughter, Melanie Cawood; sons, Michael Schmitt and Stephen Schmitt; brother, Raymond Schmitt; grandchildren, Nathaniel Schmitt, Michael Schmitt, Jr., Nicholes Schmitt, Samantha Schmitt, and Aaron Cawood; and great-grandchildren, Scarlett Schmitt and Jade Schmitt.

The family would like to give special thanks to Wallace Pardo, Brittany Connelly, and Raymond Schmitt for their dedicated love and support.

The services will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home and Cemeteries, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70124. The visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. until the funeral service at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Russel of Church of the King. The interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
