

John Elliott Unsworth, Jr., affectionately known as “Buster,” peacefully passed away on March 26, 2026. Born in New Orleans on December 21, 1941, Buster remained deeply connected to the city, its people, and the relationships he cherished the most.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Unsworth; his son, John E. Unsworth III and his wife, Pat; and his grandchildren, Cullen and Erin Unsworth and Abby Unsworth, who brought him immense pride and happiness. He is also survived by his sister, Bettie Nolin and her husband, Allen, as well as his niece, nephew, cousins, and extended family, all of whom were important to him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rita and John Elliott Unsworth, and son, Michael Christopher Unsworth.
A proud Jesuit High School graduate (Class of 1959), Buster carried his loyalty to Jesuit throughout his life. He earned his law degree from Loyola University Law School in 1967 and built a respected legal career, retiring as a partner at Hailey, McNamara, and Larmann.
In 1968, he married his beloved wife, Betty, beginning a 58-year partnership rooted in love, support, and unwavering commitment to family. He was a devoted husband, a steady presence, and someone his family could always rely on.
Buster found great joy in giving back. For 25 years, he coached and served as treasurer of the Carrollton Boosters, impacting generations of young people. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and a faithful parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.
Buster will be remembered for his loyalty, his generosity, and the quiet, steady way he supported the people in his life.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the many friends and loved ones who offered friendship, support, and love over the years.
A visitation will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on April 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a Mass to follow at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow within Metairie Cemetery.
