Joseph Henry Hurndon

Joseph H. Hurndon, age 89, a lifelong resident of the New Orleans area, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2015 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, FL with his family at his side. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Elaine Deris Hurndon, brother Edwin Hurndon, and daughter Diane Hurndon. He is survived by: his son Clifford Hurndon and his wife Jan, of Auburndale, FL; daughter Julie Hurndon Alexander of New Orleans; and granddaughters Allyson Hurndon Jenkins of Lakeland, FL and Amy Hurndon Sanders of Auburndale, FL. Having graduated from S. J. Peters High School, he served in the U.S. Army during WW II as a Tech Sergeant, and returned from the European theater to enter law school at Loyola University of N.O., receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1951 as an honored member of the editorial board of the Loyola Law Review. A dedicated family man and civil servant, he worked for over 40 years for the City of New Orleans, retiring in 1982 as a well-respected Deputy City Attorney and specialist in contract law litigation. He maintained a private practice specializing in contract law for many additional years into his 80’s. He has been honored as a 60 year member of both the New Orleans and Louisiana State Bar Associations. Joseph had also been a member of the Knights of Columbus, and he faithfully served his church parish, Immaculate Heart of Mary of New Orleans, LA as a lector for many years prior to moving to Metairie, LA. An open visitation for friends and others wishing to pay their respects will be held at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard, New Orleans, LA 70124 on Saturday, March 21 from 10 am to 12 noon followed by a funeral mass at the chapel at Lake Lawn. Interment will follow at St. Vincent DePaul #1 Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans.
