Joy Claire Gilmore

May 31, 1928February 16, 2021

Joy Claire Gilmore passed away in her sleep at her home on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at the age of 92. Joy both managed and sold Max Factor cosmetics at D. H. Holmes on Canal Street for 31 years until 1976. In 1976, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and had a very successful career selling cosmetics for Saks 5th Avenue and Neiman Marcus stores. She moved back to New Orleans in 1984, where she rejoined D. H. Holmes Lakeside, later turned Dilliards, until her retirement in 1992. Joy not only sold cosmetics, but acted as cosmetic artist for multiple Mardi Gras balls, and as an occasional cosmetic consultant for the Midday Show on WDSU in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. She was a very sophisticated dresser and was an exemplary model for both cosmetics and clothes having performed as a runway model for local fashion shows. Joy’s skill with numbers was one of her little known talents. She managed all of the financial books in her jobs with D. H. Holmes, as well as all her family finances. But Joy’s greatest accomplishments was that as a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She loved her family dearly and above all else. Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Hayward Francis Folse and Edna Guidroz Folse; sisters, Alice Cami (Gene) and Edna Couvillon (Clifford); and brothers, Hayward Folse, Francis Folse (Catherine), Hudson Folse (Mary), and William Folse (Jenny). She is survived by her daughter, Deborah McGrath (Glen); son, Hugh Frederick Gilmore, III; and granddaughter, Ashling Brigid McGrath. The family would like to give special thanks to Ms. Melvina Jones for her loving care of Mrs. “J”, and all the Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care staff, who attended to Mrs. Joy’s comfort. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 3310 Jefferson Hwy. in Jefferson, on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 11:00AM. A visitation will be held at the church beginning at 9:30AM. Interment will be privately held at Hope Mausoleum in New Orleans. To view and sign the guest book, please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com
