

Joy Brechtel Oswald passed away at her residence on Monday, August 15, 2022 at the age of 91 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 9, 1931 in New Orleans and attended Mt. Carmel then graduated from McMain Senior High School. She attended LSU, where she met her loving husband, Johnny. They were married on June 3, 1951 at St. Anthony Church. She retired from a career with Shell Oil Company.
Joy also was the president of the Krewe of Iris. In 1986 she was handed the traditional “Fan” with large plumes from her Aunt Irma who reigned as Captain of the Krewe of Iris from 1952 to 1986. At this time Joy became the next captain. She became known as Dolly from the movie “Hello Dolly”, and the song was played for her elaborate entrance at the carnival ball. There were many other fun experiences had by her members. After 24 years, Joy passed the traditional “Fan” to her granddaughter, Kristin Danflous and became Captain Emeritus!
Known as “Mama Joy” to everyone, she had a warm and maternal spirit. She travelled worldwide, taking 68 cruises in her lifetime and loved visiting Europe.
Daughter of the late Roy and Elsie Gibson Brechtel.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 71 years, John C. Oswald, Jr. Loving mother of Joni O. Delaney, Jayne O. Guillot (Carl) and Jodi Oswald. Adoring grandmother of Kristin Danflous, Derek Delaney Jr., David Guillot and the late Jeana Guillot. Great-grandmother of Bailey Danflous, Riley Danflous, and Will Danflous.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Monday, August 22, 2022 at 12:00 noon, immediately followed by a 2:00 p.m. mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home at 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, 70124. Interment will be private.
