She is preceded in death by her adoring husband of 53 years, Edward Joseph Hackett. Mr. Hackett was a former Marine, a WWII Veteran, and a CPA whose primary concern was to provide comfortably for his beautiful wife and precious daughter.
Mrs. Hackett is survived by her loving daughter, Colleen Marie Hackett, her sister, Marilyn Golden Brinkmann, her sister-in-law, Vondell Golden, and 32 nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She is sorely missed by all she touched, lives too great in number to name individually.
Joyce Golden graduated from John Dibert High School in New Orleans at the age of 17. She later married Eddie Hackett on June 3, 1950. The two honored those sacred vows until his death on June 19, 2003. They moved to Metairie shortly after they were wed, but she continued working for the Orleans Parish School Board where she welcomed the first child of color into the school at the beginning of integration. Bold and outspoken, this was not the first time she embraced the reversal of an unjust law. Joyce was the first woman to sit at the bar at the Sassafras Lounge. Her moxie and her love of laughter undoubtedly increased the joy of the occasion exponentially.
In 1965 Joyce and Eddie embarked on a particularly challenging adventure. They welcomed their darling baby girl into their Metairie home, whereupon Joyce gave up her career to become a full-time mother. The birth of Colleen Marie on August 11 would finally be the beginning of many dreams to come true for the happy couple. Joyce G. Hackett would instantly become a loving mother, and eventually, a loyal friend to her daughter. This affection would be extended to virtually all of Colleen’s friends, who would grow to call her “Mama Joyce.”
On Thursday, October 8, 2015, we will all join each other in the celebration of Joyce Hackett’s life as well console each other in this great loss to each of us. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Ponchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70214. In honor of her wishes, a mass will follow at 1:00 p.m. Afterwards, all are welcome to join the family for interment at Lake Lawn Park mausoleum.
