Kris’s joy in life came from living his life for others, family, friends, and customers alike. He enjoyed sharing time with his friends and family, hosting parties, gathering for Mardi Gras and other annual parades. He was passionate about the Saints, rationalizing the heartbreaking times by telling himself it was only a game. He was wise beyond his years, well-grounded and knowledgeable about a wide variety of things, and possessed more common and practical sense than two or three people combined.
Kris was a committed caretaker for his friends and family. He began his career as a housekeeper to save his wife’s clients when she was injured in a wreck. Kris became a trusted and loyal friend for the families he has served for decades because of his exceptional service and personal attention. If asked, Kris would be there, to fix something broken, help with a task, rescue the stranded, listen to family stories, offer counsel, provide gardening tips, give simple words of encouragement and at times be the uncle you did not have. He could fix or repair most anything, often doing so without being asked. Not only did he remember birthdays and other special dates with a note or card, and a gift, not just for those of his closest friends, family, but also those of his customers and their children. He would also do random acts because he cared. He enjoyed sharing meals he prepared with others, even cooking seafood, which he did not eat.
Kris is survived by his companion of 12 years, Annette Russell; his siblings, Karl E. Hery, Karen E. Hery Stevens (Charlie), and Kurt E. Hery; step-daughter, Kelly Shoemaker Madere, her daughter, Mindy Madere Templet, and her daughter, Merin; nephew, Marc A. Morrison; and a number of cherished lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nellie Bass Willson Hery and Jules LeRoy Hery; his brother, Kent E. Hery and his wife, Gayle Pennington Shoemaker.
He was cherished because of his heart, loyalty, willingness to serve, love intelligence, wisdom, wise cracks, devotion, and spirit. Kris’s devotion to his companion, family, friends, and customers and their families will leave a void that cannot be filled, yet all who knew him, are better for having had him in their lives.
