Larry Wayne Smith "Smitty"

December 30, 1948 – May 28, 2026
Obituary of Larry Wayne Smith "Smitty"
IN THE CARE OF

Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home & Cemeteries

Larry Wayne Smith was born on December 30, 1948, in Oakdale, Louisiana and passed away on May 28, 2026. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud brother, a faithful friend, and a steady, quietly courageous presence to all who knew him.

Born in Louisiana, Larry answered his country’s call and honorably served in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of Sergeant. A skilled jet aircraft engine mechanic, he served four years on active duty—including one year of foreign service—and was honorably discharged in March 1972.

After his military service, Larry graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 1977. He built a distinguished career in Architecture and recovery work; a career highlight was leading Tulane University’s Katrina Facility Recovery efforts, where his calm leadership and practical skill helped restore the campus and campus life after the storm.

Larry is survived by his wife, Patricia R. Smith, his daughter, Valentina McLeod, his siblings, Elmer Lee Smith, Jr. (Isabel Smith), Linda Bedford (Jesus Estrada), and Nelda Grimes, his nieces, Dana Tisdale and Dannielle Matassa, and his nephew, Thomas Grimes, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents; by Tommy Grimes, husband of his sister Nelda; and by Andy Bevill, son of his sister Linda Bedford, among other family members who went before him.

Larry loved fishing, playing golf, basketball, and tennis, and he watched all sports with particular devotion—a die hard Saints and Pelicans fan. He adored and pampered his chihuahua princess, Nico. Those who knew him remember a man who was strong, quiet, and strong willed, yet sensitive, honorable, selfless, and deeply loving. He followed the rules, cared for others without fanfare, and felt things deeply.

Visitation will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans on June 15, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A small service will begin at 12:00 PM the same day. Military honors will be rendered at the conclusion of the service. Interment and additional memorial details will be shared by the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either Tunnels to Towers or the Louisiana SPCA in Larry’s memory.
