On July 6, 2026, Lawrence, affectionately known as Larry and “Punt”, Sisung Jr. left his earthly body for his heavenly soul to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Larry was born on January 5, 1937, in Gretna, Louisiana, and is survived by his wonderful wife, Fran Varnell Sisung, of 63 years; his sons Lawrence J Sisung, III and Robert Lane Sisung; and his four granddaughters, Kennedy, Riley, Kasey, and Hailey. Larry is also survived by his two daughters-in law Darlene and Renee, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence J Sisung, Sr. and Hazel Elizabeth Troescher Sisung.
Larry received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in education, business and finance from Northwestern State University and worked for the Jefferson Parish Public School System and the Louisiana Department of Education. Larry served more than eight years as Superintendent of Public Schools for the Jefferson Parish Public School System, which served approximately 78,000 students. During his tenure, some of his major accomplishments included: eliminating deficit spending; leading successful public efforts to approve tax measures that funded the construction of new school facilities to eliminate the platooning of over 25,000 students; establishing the first full time kindergarten program in Louisiana; desegregating the entire school system, both student enrollment and personnel, without any major incident; implementing the first system wide testing program to annually track student achievement; appointing teachers, supervisors and parents to committees to decide the textbooks and library materials used throughout the system; establishing the first Asian and Hispanic bilingual program to accommodate the numerous non-English speaking students; expanding educational programs for students with special needs; negotiating the first, and several subsequent, union contracts; and securing voter approval of tax measures that provided increased compensation for teachers, administrators and all other non-professional employees.
In 1985, Larry changed careers and started Sisung Securities Corporation, a registered Securities and Exchange Commission investment banking firm that provided municipal and corporate underwriting, advisory, and merger and acquisition services, along with several related companies engaged in asset management, venture capital, utility and healthcare regulatory consulting, and real estate.
Additionally, Larry served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army and served on numerous boards and committees during his lifetime.
Beyond his many professional accomplishments, Larry's greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who believed deeply in education, integrity, hard work, and service to others. His wisdom, generosity, faith in God, and unwavering commitment to those he loved will remain his greatest legacy.
