I had a good friend, I lost my good friend, God bless and take care of my good friend, COL Lester Schmidt. Deanna, I can feel your lost, and my prayers go to both Lester and you. We became best of friends while serving together in the 769th Engr Bn, and that friendship continued when I transferred to Jackson Barracks. Lester helped both Pat and myself which made our living there much more comfortable. It was good being your neighbors for those seven years. I will never forget my friend.

Lester and Tommy were the nephews of my Uncle Bob Sliger. We would visit at his home on Piedmont Drive. We had such nice visits. I can remember visiting their home on DeSaix Blvd. At that time they had an aquarium which I was fascinated by. I am sorry that I did not get to the funeral. I was able to go to Aunt Sheila's funeral. I got to see both Lester and Tommy there. I did not realize that Tommy had passed away. My prayers are with you all.

My deepest condolences are extended to Deanna and the Schmidt family. I was lucky and blessed to serve under Lester in the 769th Engineer Battalion. It was an honor and privilege to serve with him. He was a great commander, leader and a true friend. The hours I spent with Lester created many of my “war stories” and I will cherish those memories. COL. Schmidt was a great leader and professional. “Lester” was a legend and a true one of a kind. He had an impact on the lives of most everyone he came in contact with. We should all be grateful for his service and contributions to us, to the LAARNG, to the state of Louisiana and our nation. He lived hard and now he can “Rest in Peace”. God bless and comfort the Schmidt family in this time of sorrow.

A great Guardsman. Visiting with Col Schmidt during my many trips to Jackson Barracks was always one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip. Lester will be greatly missed.
