Lionel Alvin Mitchell passed away on September 29th ,2026, at the age of 93. He was born in New Orleans, LA, on December 4th, 1932. After proudly serving his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, he became a truck driver, dispatcher, and forklift mechanic for Winn Dixie. Lionel was gifted with the ability to repair anything with a motor and restore many vehicles throughout his life.
Even though he experienced many tough challenges, he taught his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to live life with determination, kindness, and a sense of mischief. It never occurred to Pawpaw that underage grandsons shouldn't take the wheel when he was picking them up from school. Even after his driving privileges were revoked, he could be seen crossing all 6 lanes of the Westbank Expressway in his wheelchair to get a cup of coffee and a donut at Joe's.
Lionel is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marlene Cordilla Mitchell; daughters, Karen Torres (Ray), Fay Cooney (Mark), Kim Binney (Robert); and son, Lionel Alvin Mitchell, Jr. (Dawn). He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred F. Mitchell; grandmother, Emily Ferrand; sisters, Marilyn Elliser and Millie North; and brothers, HJ Mitchell, Latrell Mitchell, and Roy Mitchell.
The family would like to thank Shelly Domangue for her care and friendship during Lionel's final months.
In accordance with his wishes, the family will lay him to rest privately at the Southeast Veteran's Cemetery in Slidell, Louisiana.
