Lucille Daigle Holder died peacefully at Chateau de Notre Dame at the age of 94. She grew up in Opelousas and moved to New Orleans when she married. She remained a local, loving Mardi Gras parades with all the festivities. Her day always began with Mass and the rosary. True to her Cajun upbringing, she also loved Cajun dancing and was once featured in Rolling Stone Magazine. She was very active. She loved being outside in the sunshine whether playing tennis, bringing her kids fishing in City Park, swinging, or any other outdoor activities New Orleans offered. Fun, laughing and being in the sunshine made her life joyful, as she always said, "I love life!” She gave that joy to her children. She would say if you were feeling bad to just go out and play and you'll feel better. Over the years white was her favorite color and it's the only color she ever wore. We who loved her will always see her wearing white and ordering raw oysters and iced tea with about 20 packets of sugar with bread pudding for dessert. Many evenings she relaxed on her porch swing with a snowball in hand. We know, we will see her in the sunshine!
She is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Daigle and Estelle Mistric Daigle; ex-husband, Herman Holder; companions, George Thorning and David Jacob; siblings, Elaine Mouton, Agnes Bertrand, Norma Matthew, Pearl Boorhies, and Oscar Daigle; and grandchild, Micah Palotta.
She is survived by her daughter, Joy Weil; sons, Larry Holder (Laurie) and Johnny Holder (the late Nola); grandchildren, Michelle Wise, Tina Newberry, Larry Holder, Jamie Abate, and Shelley Pitre; and great grandchildren, Katherine Wise, Caroline Wise, Gabriella Newberry, Brady Holder, and Chase Holder.
The family would like to thank Notre Dame Hospice, her doctor Dr. Louis Arencebia, Dr. Lisa Dufrene, her Chateau de Notre Dame family in particular Ronnie Barerra, Diane Williams (her “best friend”), Doris Le and her staff of nurses and aids at the entire Chateau family for over her last two years. Thank you especially to the entire kitchen staff and housekeeping who always made sure she had what she needed.
Very special thank you for Diane Poynott CSJ and her godchild, Gloria Stoufflet, and Lynn Lewis who spent many loving hours taking her into the sunshine, feeding her strawberry shakes and helping her have joy in her last days.
