Marcel Arévalo Gonzalez, a pillar in both his community and family, passed away at the age of 60 on Sunday, May 12, 2024 after a brave battle with cancer. He will be sorely missed by his wife of 34 years, Alyce Kahn Gonzalez; his cherished children, Madeline Hoisington (Nicholas) and Alex Gonzalez (Kristina Metz); and his adoring grandchildren, Lucas and Graham Hoisington, who affectionately called him "Papa." Marcel is also survived by his siblings: Marina Reed, Henry Gonzalez, and Marvic Thompson, as well as many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Maria Figueroa; his father, Victor Gonzalez Sr.; and his brother, Victor Gonzalez Jr.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1963, Marcel came to New Orleans in 1965, where he became a proud graduate of Brother Martin High School and the University of New Orleans, earning a business degree. Throughout his distinguished 40-year career in banking, Marcel served his community tirelessly, holding several positions and titles, culminating in his role as a Vice President of Gulf Coast Bank. He was also a respected board member of several local business and civic associations, including the Kenner Business Association, Jefferson Chamber, JEDCO, and Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Above all, he was skilled at building and maintaining relationships with his colleagues, and connecting with people was his true passion. Marcel's commitment to serving others was recognized by the American Cancer Society, which honored him with an award in his name.
Beyond his professional achievements, Marcel found true joy in the company of his family and friends. Whether going on family trips, visiting his grandchildren, or sharing a simple meal (usually breakfast, at home, cooked by his own hand), he treasured these moments dearly. He was proud to live in New Orleans and loved all that it has to offer, especially Jazz Fest and Mardi Gras. An avid golfer, connoisseur of whiskey and fine cigars, and music enthusiast, Marcel's passions were as diverse as they were deep. His love for life and genuine connections with people will forever be remembered and celebrated.
We will honor Marcel’s life with a memorial Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, on Wednesday, May 22 at 1:00 pm, with visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Following Mass, Marcel will be laid to rest in Metairie Cemetery.
